“I’ll eat it later” – how do we create food waste?

How many times last week did you say to yourself that you will finish that meal the next day or that you don’t really feel like eating this apple or tomato now and then forgot about it completely until it went bad and you had to throw it away? Many people do not really pay attention or have much care for food waste, but if we look closer numbers behind it are terrifying for multiple reasons.

To begin with, according to 2014 EPA (United States Environment Protection Agency) study more than 38 million tons of food are thrown away every year only in North America. An average American throw away one fourth of all the products purchased. If we think about it for a moment it is hard to find another product, which is so heavily over-purchased. Putting it in different perspective, imagine if you went shopping and bought four t-shirts at the mall. Later when walking back to your car you would simply throw one of them away in the parking lot. Ridiculous, isn’t it? Unfortunately, when it comes to buying food people have slightly different perspective when justifying their purchases. In his book “American Wasteland,” activist and author Jonathan Bloom estimated that the United States could fill a college stadium with the amount of food it wastes … in a day. What is more, authors of Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, estimated that the amount of food thrown away in the United States in 2012 would have been enough to feed 190 million adults every daythat year.

There are however, other strictly economic factors, why we should not throw away so much food. According to NRDC (Natural Resources Defense Council) amount of food waste created by an average American family of 4 translates to an estimate of 1,350 to 2,275 dollars annually. If the same family would store their food properly and consume all the products they bought it would translate to monthly savings of nearly 200 dollars. Throwing away food is not only very costly, but has an extremely negative impact on the environment. Report of British environmental agency - WRAP estimates that if food scraps were removed from landfills there, the level of greenhouse gas abatement would be equivalent to removing one-fifth of all the cars in the country from the road.

Undoubtedly, food waste has many negative effects on both our society and our environment. One of the most effective way to increase freshness of products we buy and consequently limit waste is proper storage of your food. The main reason why food products go out-of-date is their contact with air and exposure to humidity. Dafi offers an easy and comfortable solution, when it comes to storing food properly. Air-tight vacuum containers not only protects food from unwanted exposure to humidity, but also create vacuum inside, which extends freshness of food up to 5 times. Now with Dafi Vacuum Containers you can buy all the ingredients you want in the store and after getting home you can be certain that all of them will be fresh and tasty when you want them.
