TIPS TO STAY HYDRATED DURING THE WINTER SEASON

Winter weather can do a number on our system, leaving our skin parched, body dehydrated and lips chapped.

Regulating our hydration levels in the winter can be a bit tricky, because we may not be feeling as thirsty as we usually would during warmer, summer temperatures. However, it’s just as important being well-hydrated during the winter months as it is in the summer season with quality alkaline H2O.

Here’s some tips to help keep you hydrated in the winter months, improving your health, keeping all systems flowing properly (ahem, your bowels), prevent cramping, lethargy, and other side effects of dehydration.

EAT HYDRATING FOODS

Oranges, melons, celery, oatmeals, smoothies, strawberries, soups and yogurt can be hydrating additions to your diet. All of these foods are higher in water count than most, and it’s a healthy, sneaky way to add in extras ounces of H2O to your daily water intake.

SET A DAILY WATER GOAL

Challenge yourself to set a daily water goal to consume each day. There are plenty of apps out there that can help you track this, and tell you exactly how much you are supposed to have. A general rule, aim to drink 8 eight-ounce glasses of water a day.

To help achieve this goal, grab yourself a filter water bottle to real up from an alkaline water pitcher, counting the number of bottles you’re drinking on your app or phone tallied throughout the day.

Increasing the amount of pH water in your diet will also help to reduce the amount of acidity with other foods and drinks that aren’t so great for you during the holiday season, naturally cleansing the body.

DRINK A GLASS OF WATER BEFORE EACH MEAL

New habits take time to become natural instinct. Pairing new habits (drinking more water) next to older, innate ones (eating meals) helps us to make a new habit stick.

Right before your breakfast, lunch, dinner and any snacks in between, have a glass of alkaline water from an alkaline pitcher with filter cartridges before eating. This tip has a two-part benefit. First, drinking water before a meal can help prevent overeating because we’re actually thirsty, not hungry. Second, you’ll seamlessly take on the newer habit to drink more water, being cued by your desire to eat.

TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION YOUR WORKOUT

Just because it’s not bikini season doesn’t mean winter is the time to slack off from your workout routine. If you’re sweating more, or relatively the same, make sure you’re replacing those fluids just the same.

When working out, bring along a filter water bottle to sip between sets, or every 15 minutes. A tip, set a timer on your phone or fitness tracker to remind you “it’s time to drink up!” so you don’t forget your new habit.

WEAR LAYERS

Breathable layers act as a defense for cool air hitting the skin. I recommend this tip for winter months and especially when flying on airplanes. Keeping your skin covered minimizes the exposure to cold, dry air, helping to keep moisture and hydration in your body.

In addition to reducing your skin’s exposure, wear breathable fabrics to help regulate your body temperature. Especially going between forced air heating systems and the outdoor chilled air.

Lastly, you can also use an air humidifier in your bedroom to increase the moisture count, especially in the room you sleep or spend the most time in.
